Part 1 · The ideas·Stop 3 of 14
Two minutes
Tick every one you recognise. Nothing is recorded.
Every one of those is the same event.
Two parts of you wanted different things — and the one that made the plan was not the one who turned up.
If that has ever looked like a failure of will, it isn’t. It’s what a mind is.
Your mind is like a house made up of seven residents. They’ve been there as long as you have and every one of them has the same goal — to help you do what is best for you. What differs is the question each one is asking about your welfare.
Not warring factions. A team that agrees on the aim and disagrees about the route.
Neither of them was wrong. They were asking different questions about your welfare and arriving at different answers, which is exactly what they are for.
You were asked, a minute ago, about something you would never do. You couldn’t know — and now you can see why. The answer depends on which resident is leading when the moment actually arrives, and that isn’t settled in advance. It’s settled there, under whatever conditions the day brings.
Which raises the obvious problem. Seven residents, seven questions, and only one of them can be at the front at any given moment.
So who is leading — and who chose them?
