THE NULL HYPOTHESIS

The Navigational Way is a captain's log — one person's journey, mine. It isn't a path to anywhere. It's a guide to navigating uncertainty. Much of what's here hasn't been scientifically verified. It comes from long observation and from learning by living.

I began medical school in 1980. In the forty-six years since, at a conservative estimate of 150 to 200 encounters a week across a working year, I have sat with well over a third of a million people at close range — while staying awake to my own existence, asking questions, and holding the answers to a consistent process.

What let me narrate the journey without getting lost was finding true north: the Null Hypothesis. That only became possible once I had clarified the question of consciousness — the Toye Clarification (see
The Trick Question). Together, these two are the start point of The Navigational Way.

They amount to a complete paradigm shift.

The map is our model of reality. The territory is reality itself. The prevailing paradigm has these backwards: it treats certainty as the ground we stand on and uncertainty as a defect to be cleared away. The Null Hypothesis says otherwise, and demonstrates it categorically.

What I don't know always exceeds what I know. The territory always exceeds the map. That describes reality more accurately than the alternative — and once you accept it fully, everything changes. The journey starts to make sense.

This site is my attempt to arrange what I've observed into something coherent enough to be useful to someone else.
